Istanbul summers are getting hotter and drier. In these conditions, the most sustainable way to keep a garden alive is not fighting with thirsty plants, but building the right palette from the start with drought-tolerant species.
Why low-water plants?
Drought-tolerant plants not only lower the water bill; they also mean less maintenance, fewer diseases and a longer life. With their strong root systems, they are not immediately affected by a day or two of interruption in midsummer.
Species suited to the Istanbul climate
Many Mediterranean, drought-tolerant species grow successfully in Istanbul conditions:
- Aromatic shrubs such as lavender, sage and rosemary
- Olive, bay and mastic tree
- Ornamental grasses (Miscanthus, Pennisetum, Stipa)
- Hardy evergreens such as juniper, mahonia and cherry laurel
- Perennials such as echinacea, achillea and sedum
Soil and mulching
The secret of a low-water garden is in the soil before the plant selection. A permeable, well-drained soil and a 5–7 cm mulch layer covering the root zone reduce evaporation and suppress weeds.
The right watering habit
Even drought-tolerant plants need regular watering in the first year; once established, watering is reduced. The aim is to encourage deep rooting: infrequent but deep watering is always healthier than frequent, shallow watering.
